DIY Edibles: Cannabutter Recipe Guide

Making your own edibles at home is a gratifying experience! You’re about to not only eat something yummy that you made with your own hands but you have much more control over your marijuana dosing.

Cannabis is fat-soluble which means that it needs to be infused into a fatty substance for you to be able to make edibles out of it. The easiest way to do this is by making your own cannabutter at home!

At Ohio Marijuana Card, we want to be your number one choice as a medical marijuana card provider as well as give you fun ways to use your treatment!

Infusing butter with marijuana is one of the first steps to making your own edibles at home. While it may seem very easy and simple, it can still become a complicated process. This recipe will help guide you through, so you will be making cannabutter at home in no time!

Note: Any cannabis cook should be aware of proper dosing for themselves, as homemade edibles can be difficult to accurately dose.

Cannabutter Recipe:

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup of butter

  • 1 cup of ground cannabis

  • 1 cheesecloth

  • 1 mason jar or storage container

Directions:

  1. Decarboxylate the cannabis

    1. This is the most important step and is the one that is often missed resulting in a weak or ineffective cannabutter. Decarboxylating marijuana is how the compounds are activated through heat. One of the easiest ways to decarb marijuana is in the oven.

    2. Preheat the oven to 245F degrees.

    3. Place marijuana flower on a non-stick baking sheet or use parchment paper to prevent sticking.

    4. Bake for 30-40 minutes.

      1. If the cannabis you are using is older and dryer, it may take less time than newer, fresher cannabis.

    5. Check the cannabis every ten minutes and shake up the flower on the sheet in order to make sure they are exposed.

  2. When finished decarboxylating the flower, grind up the cannabis in your grinder on the more coarse side.

  3. Add one cup of butter to a saucepan and melt it on low.

    1. You can mix in one cup of water to prevent burning.

  4. As the butter melts, add in the coarsely ground cannabis flower and stir.

  5. Keep on low heat and simmer for about 2-3 hours.

    1. Occasionally stir, and make sure it does not boil.

  6. Strain the finished butter while it is still melted.

    1. The easiest way to do this is to line a strainer with cheesecloth and place it over a storage jar. You can pour the butter through the strainer slowly to seep. Do not squeeze the cheesecloth, as this will push bad-tasting plant fibers through.

  7. Place the storage jar in the refrigerator for about an hour until chilled.

    1. Any excess water will seep to the bottom of the jar. You can leave it in there, pour it out, or move the butter into another container. It is up to you!

  8. Dose low and slow!

    1. Remember that heat, strain, and time all play a part in how your cannabutter dosage will be. Try a small amount first, and wait to see the effects. If you’re not happy with the effects try again the next day with a slightly larger dose. Keep repeating this process until you find the exact dosage that works best for you!
