PTSD in Veterans

Veterans experience PTSD as a group at a higher rate due to combat trauma. Veterans of the Vietnam war have a 30% rate of developing PTSD over their lifetime.

Other factors in the military can also contribute to an already stressful situation which can cause higher rates of PTSD as well. One of these factors is military sexual trauma (MST). MST is any sexual assault or hassament experienced by those while serving in the military. 23% of women in the military have reported sexual assault, and 55% of women and 38% of men have reported sexual harassment.

Cannabis Can Treat PTSD

Let’s get into a little bit about the science behind how cannabis can treat PTSD!

Everybody has an endocannabinoid system (ECS) that is responsible for maintaining homeostasis, or balance, throughout the body. Endocannabinoids attach to cannabinoid receptors to ensure that it can fulfill its normal functions.

The ECS can be thrown off balance when someone has a medical condition such as PTSD. Medical marijuana has endocannabinoids that can attach to the CB1 and CB2 receptors and help bring balance back to the ECS. This is how medical marijuana can treat PTSD!
