Last week, we discussed how the stigma surrounding marijuana is often the road block between someone getting help for their medical conditions and their relief.
We believe at Ohio Marijuana Card that ending the stigma is one of the most important things we can do as a company. We want to go above and beyond being your favorite medical marijuana provider and provide you with the information that you need to stay educated on medical marijuana.
Today, we are going to dive into part two of our series in which we will debunk some of the most common misconceptions about marijuana. You deserve to know the truth and you deserve to know relief.
Debunked Myth #3: “Marijuana users are lazy.”
Although this myth is not as potent as the myths that we discussed in part one of this series, it still stings a bit. There has been a never ending stereotype of the “pothead” or “stoner” based on the media's portrayal of those that use marijuana. It’s been in countless films such as “Cheech & Chong” and “Harold & Kumar Go To White Castle.”
While these films are joking around, they definitely create a false narrative for society as to who marijuana users are. They stereotype users as being lazy, silly, and even just dumb when in reality marijuana users can be an entire plethora of things!
This stereotype glosses over the important fact that marijuana is really beneficial for its users! There are strains that make you relax and calm down which can contribute to the “couch potato” stereotype. But this stereotype ignores the fact that some of our patients actually need that for their health and wellness. We have had patients that have chronic or intractable pain that only find relief with relaxing marijuana strains.
On the other hand, there also are strains, such as sativa strains, that have the opposite effect making you feel motivated and energetic! These strains are great for daytime use and really helps those with depression, anxiety or PTSD.
Debunked Myth #4: “Using marijuana will kill your brain cells.”
The “pothead” stereotype has contributed to the misconception that using marijuana kills your brain cells. This concept alludes to the false idea that marijuana users are “dumb” since they kill their brain cells. We know this is completely not true. In fact marijuana consumers lie all over the “smart” spectrum, just like any other group of people.
There is no direct link between using marijuana and memory loss or any negative effects on the brain!
Back in 2012, a study showed a link between marijuana use and lower IQ over time for adolescents. This was unfortunately later replicated by other researchers.
But correlation does not equal causation! A more recent twin-study took a deeper look at the methodology behind the first study and found that it was making unsupported assumptions about marijuana’s role in IQ decline. They found that marijuana doesn’t cause a decline at all! Instead, genetic and environmental factors were completely ignored which both are leading contributions to lower IQ.
Debunked Myth #5: “Medical cannabis is just a way for people to get ‘high’ all the time.”
This myth is one of the most dangerous ones! Many people who are against marijuana use believe that medical cannabis is just a way for people to legally get “high” all the time. This myth makes the assumption that marijuana has no medicinal value therefore people are using marijuana to get “high” and not to treat their medical condition.
We know this to be false! A study found that most people who consume marijuana are not looking to party but are actually looking to find relief for their medical condition. This fact alone debunks this myth since it reveals that people are in a lot of pain and are simply looking to find relief. We also know that marijuana has healing properties that keep consumers coming back to treat their medical conditions such as cancer, HIV/AIDS, chronic pain, multiple sclerosis and more!
