What Is 420 Day? Cannabis Culture Explained

With the quickly expanding medical marijuana program in Ohio, it’s no wonder people want to celebrate their long-awaited relief! Patients across Ohio are finally able to enjoy their lives and complete daily tasks they could not do before without immense pain or other symptoms of their qualifying condition.

Celebrating your opportunity to self-medicate with cannabis is a very positive thing, and you can do it with marijuana events, dispensary discounts, and more!

But have you heard of 420 Day? Every April, cannabis connoisseurs and advocates celebrate and smoke marijuana. Sign me up!

What Is 420 Day?

420 Day is said to have originated in California back in the 70’s. As the legend goes, a group of teenagers from San Rafael High School would smoke marijuana every day after school at 4:20. 420 soon became their code for marijuana.

However, nobody really knows how 4/20 Day came about. There are some stories, but no concrete explanation.

420 Day really used to be more of an excuse to smoke weed, but now its meaning is much more substantial. April 20 (4th month, 20th day) is a day of social justice now.

What Does It Mean?

Every year, thousands of Americans come together in public and private spaces to celebrate the drug that is still illegal at the federal level. Rallies have been getting increasingly larger every year, especially with the growing controversy regarding marijuana.

People are using 4/20 as a day to advocate for the legalization of marijuana across the country, both medically and recreationally. Marijuana is currently legal in 37 states but still remains a schedule 1 drug federally, something that most Americans cannot understand or justify if they tried.

420 Day shows just how much America seeks change in the medical and recreational marijuana industries across America. The scheduling of marijuana in federal law is outdated, nonsensical, and just wrong.
