Terminal illness is a descriptive term given to any medical condition that is likely to end a patient’s life within 6 months or less. This is not a stand-alone diagnosis but goes hand in hand with another serious medical condition.

A doctor will usually determine that a medical condition has become terminal when it can no longer be treated or controlled by traditional medicine. Without a treatment to help, a patient’s major organ systems will fail and cause death.

Once a patient’s illness is deemed terminal, they will usually start hospice care meaning that the patient will either enter a medical facility or work with a home health team dedicated to maximizing the quality of the patient’s final time.
