Facts About the Rise of Medical Marijuana Sales in Ohio

Ever since the State of Ohio began allowing for the legal sale and consumption of medical marijuana to take place, business has been booming. The products on sale at dispensaries throughout the State of Ohio include medical marijuana gummies, cookies, tinctures, topicals, cartridges and more. The success of Ohio’s medical marijuana program has led to the sale of almost $725 million so far, according to the latest sales figures shared by the Ohio Department of Commerce Medical Marijuana Control Program. There are a variety of factors that have contributed to Ohio’s strong medical marijuana sales.

Ohio’s Medical Marijuana Program Has Matured Quickly

One of the biggest reasons why Ohio’s medical marijuana program has been so successful from a sales perspective is because it didn’t take very long to get up and running. The speed at which Ohio has been able to provide the infrastructure for a successful medical marijuana program was especially impressive to Regional General Manager for Acreage Holdings, the company responsible for operating processing plants and retail stores in several states. Kate Nelson, told WKYC-Cleveland that, “Ohio’s program has matured pretty quickly.” She’s particularly impressed at how much the program has improved regarding patient access.

Nelson told WKYC, “I’m very impressed at how much it’s grown as far as patient access goes, recommending physicians, and products available.” She’s been working on plants and products here in the Buckeye state ever since lawmakers legalized medical marijuana consumption and sales in 2016. Even though Ohio’s medical marijuana sales have recently picked up, high sales weren’t always the case. Initial medical marijuana sales didn’t meet projections since there were so many issues around setting up the industry, licensing, and other obstacles.

Medical Marijuana Manufacturers Have Leveraged Automation Into Their Efforts

Among the reasons why medical marijuana sales have been on the rise is the fact that automation is becoming more commonplace within the industry as an increasing number of medical marijuana growers and processors are relying on automation in order to meet demand. Nelson told WKYC, “Automation is now coming into cannabis. We’re starting to see for the first time large-scale automation.” Nelson explained the onset of automation within the cannabis industry while displaying the technology that exists within one of the State’s cannabis processing plants.

The introduction of automation into the cannabis industry isn’t surprising considering the fact that it’s becoming a bigger factor in just about every industry. Properly leveraging automation has the potential to increase access patients have to medical marijuana. This is welcome news for businesses within the industry especially considering the prospect for the legalization of recreational cannabis.

The Early Success of Medical Marijuana in Ohio Has Made It So Recreational Cannabis Use Is Now a Possibility

Naturally, the rising sales of medical marijuana have led to questions about the prospects of legal recreational marijuana being on the table in Ohio. Even though the Ohio State Legislature passed the law allowing for the legal consumption of medical marijuana, along with Governor Mike Dewine, they are not in favor of recreational use. Regardless, it could still be on the horizon anyway thanks to a campaign to legalize cannabis in the state being led by the Coalition to Regulate Marijuana Like Alcohol.

Multiple major players within the medical marijuana industry are in favor of the legislation proposed by the group, including Nelson. Their campaign collected enough signatures from voters to force legislators to pass their plan, or an amended version of it before it reaches the ballot in November. Not only does that legislation have a possibility of becoming law, but both democratic challengers for governor, Nan Whaley and John Cranley support legalization and have plans for enacting it should they get elected. Unless there are dramatic changes to State law, the only way to legally purchase and consume cannabis for the foreseeable future is with a medical marijuana card.
