Kent State’s Online Cannabis Education Program Expands as Ohio’s Marijuana Industry Booms

Ohio’s marijuana industry is growing at an unprecedented rate following the legalization of recreational marijuana. Since adult-use sales began in August 2024, Ohio dispensaries have generated $242 million in just five months, according to the Ohio Division of Cannabis Control. With over 120 licensed recreational dispensaries operating statewide, demand for knowledgeable professionals in the industry is at an all-time high.

Kent State University has recognized this need and launched an online Cannabis Certificate Program in partnership with Green Flower, a leader in cannabis education and workforce development. Since its introduction last year, more than 200 students have enrolled, with over 60 already completing the program. As dispensaries prepare for hiring sprees, many professionals are turning to Kent State’s program to gain the skills needed to enter or advance in the industry.

A Life-Changing Opportunity

For Stephanie Barringer, a 51-year-old mother of six and grandmother of six, cannabis education became a new career path after a devastating car accident left her with a traumatic brain injury. Struggling with pain and motor skill issues, she initially resisted painkillers prescribed by doctors. Instead, a therapist recommended medical marijuana, which changed her life.

Inspired by her own experience, Barringer enrolled in Kent State’s program in December 2023 to learn more about the industry. She has since completed courses in Cannabis Compliance and Risk Management, the Business of Cannabis, and Cannabis Healthcare and Medicine. Now, she’s preparing to enter the workforce, aiming to educate others on marijuana’s benefits.

Kent State’s Role in Shaping Ohio’s Marijuana Workforce

Kent State’s cannabis certification program is designed for working professionals and career changers. Unlike traditional college courses, these programs are fully online and asynchronous, allowing students to complete coursework at their own pace within six months.

“The flexibility is key,” said Eric Mansfield, Kent State’s Assistant Vice President for Content Strategy & Communications. “These are not traditional semester courses. Students can enroll in individual classes and work through them online at their convenience.”

Since launching, the program has attracted a diverse range of students, many of whom are already professionals in related fields looking to make a transition into the marijuana industry.

Why Cannabis Education Matters in Ohio’s Expanding Market

The marijuana industry is often referred to as recession-proof, with continued growth projected nationwide. Green Flower’s CEO, Max Simon, emphasizes that formal education gives students an edge in the competitive job market.

“These programs genuinely help people learn the industry, develop the skills necessary to stand out, and find direction in what they want to do,” Simon said. “Our students are getting jobs, starting businesses, and taking leadership roles within this booming industry.”

With recreational marijuana now legal in Ohio, dispensaries are expected to ramp up hiring efforts. A background in compliance, business operations, or healthcare applications of marijuana can set job seekers apart as companies look for knowledgeable employees.

Enrollment and Program Details

Kent State and Green Flower offer rolling enrollment, with new cohorts launching every two months. The next session begins in early March, with registration for the current cohort extended through January 19.

The program costs around $3,000 per course, but promotional discounts are available. With an asynchronous format, students can complete coursework at their own pace within six months, making it an ideal option for working professionals.

For those looking to break into Ohio’s marijuana industry, now is the time. Whether seeking dispensary jobs, compliance roles, or business opportunities, formal cannabis education provides a strong foundation for success in this rapidly growing field.
