Ohio Medical Marijuana News

2023 has been busy for Ohio lawmakers already with changes to the medical marijuana program left and right! Ohio’s medical marijuana program has grown and progressed once again, and we are excited about it!

In this blog, we will talk about the recent changes to Ohio’s medical marijuana program.

New Medical Marijuana Bill

Finally, new conditions are potentially being added to Ohio’s qualifying conditions list! Legislation was introduced this week that would allow doctors to recommend cannabis to anyone with a condition deemed as debilitating.

The legislation would also increase the number of dispensaries in the state and allow marijuana growers to expand their facilities. More growing means more marijuana, and the price of medical products will come down.

The bill would also change oversight of the medical marijuana program to the Department of Commerce. Currently, the program is overseen by three separate state agencies. Another great addition to Ohio’s program is that the bill would also allow reciprocity.

If the bill passes, dispensaries would be allowed to advertise on social media without approval from the state, and it would prohibit dispensaries from being within a mile of each other.

Finally, the bill would also officially allow state-licensed dispensaries to offer drive thru or curbside pick up! Although some already do, it was a gray area and not every dispensary offers it currently.

Some of the new conditions that would be added include:

  • Arthritis

  • Migraines

  • Chronic muscle spasms

  • Terminal Illness

  • Opioid use disorder

Ohio residents have also been pushing for autism to be added to the list of qualifying conditions, but the state has rejected the proposal multiple times. However, with the new bill, things might change.

Under the new bill, any condition a doctor deems as debilitating would qualify a person for their medical card. This would include autism spectrum disorder.

Two more dispensary Certificates of Operation were also awarded this week, which means at minimum, the state will be getting more dispensaries!
