Big news for Ohio medical marijuana patients! Starting on March 24, 2026, the Ohio Division of Cannabis Control (DCC) is updating daily purchase limits and simplifying the way “days’ supply” is calculated. These changes are designed to make it easier for patients to access the products they need while staying within the state’s rules.
Higher Daily Purchase Limits
Under the new rules, medical marijuana patients and their caregivers can buy more marijuana from dispensaries in a single day:
2.5 ounces of plant material (flower)
15,000 milligrams of THC in non-plant products like edibles, tinctures, and vapes
These updated limits match what non-medical adult-use consumers in Ohio are allowed to purchase, helping create consistency across the state’s marijuana program. While adult-use marijuana is now legal in Ohio, there are still important benefits to being a medical marijuana patient, which we’ll cover later in this blog.
Patients Can Buy Multiple Days’ Supply at Once
One of the most helpful updates is that medical marijuana patients can now purchase up to four days’ worth of marijuana in a single transaction.
This is especially useful for patients who:
Have mobility issues
Live far from a dispensary
Have conditions that make frequent trips difficult
Instead of multiple visits each week, patients can now stock up in fewer trips, making it easier to manage their treatment.
Caregiver Purchase Limits
Caregivers still play a key role, but their limits are a bit different. They can:
Purchase only the standard daily limit (2.5 ounces of plant material and 15,000 mg of THC per day)
Can not buy multiple days’ supply in one transaction
This ensures caregivers follow safe purchase practices while supporting patients.
Understanding the 90-Day Supply Limit
Ohio is also updating possession limits over time. The new 90-day supply is calculated as 90 times the daily purchase limit.
Patients should keep in mind: if you buy up to four days’ worth in a single visit, you still need to make sure you don’t exceed your total 90-day possession limit.
No More Days’ Supply Calculator
Previously, Ohio used a “days’ supply calculator” to track how much marijuana a patient could buy. That system is now being phased out.
Now, patients and dispensaries only need to follow the daily purchase limits. The calculator in the patient registry is no longer a reliable reference, which simplifies purchases and reduces confusion.
Why Having a Medical Marijuana Card Still Matters
Having an Ohio medical marijuana card offers benefits that go beyond just access:
Avoid the 10% Excise Tax: Recreational marijuana purchases in Ohio are subject to a 10% excise tax on top of regular sales tax. Medical marijuana patients do not pay this tax, which can add up to significant savings for patients who purchase regularly.
Access to Medical-Only Discounts: Many dispensaries offer exclusive deals for cardholders, including lower pricing, special promotions, and patient appreciation events that are not available to adult-use customers.
Ongoing Medical Oversight: You can discuss dosage, product types, and symptom management with a registered medical marijuana doctor, something recreational consumers don’t get.
Having a medical marijuana card in Ohio means more than just legal access; it provides financial benefits, special offers, and expert guidance to help you use marijuana safely and effectively.
