While most of the Ohio Medical Marijuana Control Program is operational, there is one side of the industry that has been slower to follow: processors. With a total of 40 processing facilities planned in Ohio, only about 12 of the processors have received final approval for operations. The good news is that we are starting to see more processing licenses approved, with many of the processors also holding Ohio cultivation licenses!
There are three types of Ohio medical cannabis licenses in the OMMCP:
Dispensaries - licensed to sell medical cannabis products to registered Ohio patients
Cultivators - licensed to grow medical cannabis flower to supply Ohio dispensaries
Processors - licensed to take cannabis material and extract it into processed cannabis products including edibles, tinctures, concentrates, and topicals
Out of the 40 processors that will be operational in Ohio, only a handful of the processors also holds a cultivation license. One such dual processor-cultivator is Calyx Peak, an Akron-based operator that brings experience from other states including California, Nevada and Massachusetts with recognized brands including the "SONG" and "Josh D" product lines.
SONG Line
The inspiration for this product line is based on the experiences of Dr. Paul Song, Calyx Peak's Chief Medical Officer. According to Calyx Peak's website, "SONG was created with three main goals: to help people understand—and access—cannabis’ remarkable power as a natural painkiller; to produce premium quality, highly-standardized products that provide the same reliable, effective relief each time they’re used; and to formulate these products to treat various conditions based on medical data from internal research, independent certification organizations, and peer-reviewed studies."
The SONG line has been designed around a spotlight of focus on wellness. In addition to a website offering expert information on how cannabis can help treat a range of medical issues, Song produces premium quality cannabis products including topical creams and tinctures.
Josh D Line
You might notice that Calyx Peak regularly includes OG Kush varieties in its products. The reason for this is Calyx Peak's relationship with elite grower and industry pioneer Josh Del Rosso, who has cultivated the OG Kush varietal since the mid-1990s and helped launch this patient favorite strain to legendary status. Josh D Farms recently "dominated" at the 2019 Emerald Cup with four top ten finishes and winning #1 for mixed light flower with its Ice Cream Cake strain!
LOCAL Cannabis Company Line
This is breaking news in Ohio's medical marijuana market as Calyx Peak plans to rebrand its SONG line, and add a new line under the name of LOCAL Cannabis Company. The goal is to allow SONG to remain a strong presence in Ohio through a health and wellness focus, including topicals, tinctures, capsules, etc., rather than flower. In the near future, all SONG flower will now be sold under the brand name LOCAL Cannabis Company.
Processed Products
Calyx Peak is one of the most recent processors to hit Ohio dispensaries. With full control over the entire process of cannabis production - from seed to cultivation to processing - this allows Calyx Peak to maintain its premium standards while formulating products based around Calyx Peak's unique strain varieties and team knowledge.
The first processed products released by Calyx Peak in Ohio were CO2 and distillate concentrate vape cartridges processed from the strains OG Kush and Catfish. Next up, Calyx Peak will be using patient favorite strains including Orange 43, Ice Cream Cake, Sundae Driver, and Dosiface to process into CO2 and distillate cartridges.
Additionally, Calyx Peak will have "exotic" edible flavors coming out very soon!

While Calyx Peak is an Akron-based operator, Calyx Peak appears to have a connection with nearly every dispensary operator in Ohio based on product availability across the state. As such, Calyx Peak will be holding patient education days at dispensaries on the following dates:
