Ohio Dispensary Sales Increase Despite Pandemic

Updated: Jul 7, 2023

As Ohio began shutting down to slow the spread of COVID-19, Ohio dispensaries were deemed an essential business in order to ensure patients are still able to access their medication and not have a disruption in their care. While countless businesses and events remain closed or canceled, the marijuana industry has continued to grow at an accelerating rate. Despite the economic slowdown we’re seeing, sales at dispensaries across Ohio have shown significant growth since the start of COVID-19.

Since March 15th 2020, the medical cannabis industry has reported $85 million in sales, and dispensary employees have reported patient traffic almost doubling in recent weeks. With traffic increasing, dispensaries have taken steps to ensure patient safety and adhere to social distancing guidelines. Thankfully, state regulators have acted quickly to implement some new policies to allow dispensaries to do call ahead ordering and curbside pickup, thereby limiting the amount of time patients spend inside the dispensary.

Some other small measures taken by dispensaries to improve safety is the removal of sniff jars and handheld menus. Ideally, home delivery of patients' medical cannabis would be a great solution, but for now, the next best thing for patients to consider would be to designate a caregiver to pick up their medication for them so that they don’t have to visit the dispensary themselves, especially if they are immunocompromised.

The medical marijuana industry hasn’t slowed down during these challenging and uncertain times, as patients continue to seek relief by purchasing medication from dispensaries across the state.
