The most common complaint about the medical marijuana program in Ohio is that legal marijuana products found at dispensaries are too expensive. The other challenges to conveniently participating in the program are a lack of cannabis dispensaries in more remote regions of the Buckeye State, and long lines and wait times.
This is all about to change, however, after the Ohio Board of Pharmacy announced that it would open up licensing for an additional 73 dispensaries, and cultivators would have the opportunity to expand their operations to keep up with demand.
Overwhelming Response to Call for Dispensary License Applications
Applications for new Ohio dispensary licenses were accepted between September 20th and November 18th, 2021. According to Cincinnati.com, nearly 1,500 were processed ahead of the deadline.
Submitted applications will be selected by a lottery system, and they will then go through the vetting process to ensure that they meet all the requirements. Once they are approved, operators can begin building out their dispensaries!
In addition to expanding the number of medical marijuana dispensaries licensed in Ohio from 57 to 130, existing cultivators can double their operations. Level I growers can expand from 25,000 square feet of growing space to 50,000 square feet. Level II growers will be able to grow 6,000 square feet of cannabis, up from 3,000 square feet.
